Our uncompromising faculty and staff are dedicated to the welfare of children and adolescents. One of two major pediatric centers in Connecticut, Yale offers an extensive range of services for patients through our 14 specialties. In addition, we have several interdisciplinary centers and programs that involve collaborations with multiple departments throughout Yale Medicine and Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital. Thanks to our reputation for comprehensive pediatric care, we serve as a regional and national center for referral and consultation. Many of our physicians are internationally recognized for their innovative approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of conditions including arrhythmias, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, childhood cancers, juvenile diabetes, dyslexia, blood disorders, infectious diseases, and complications of premature birth, as well as many other disorders. We specialize in helping patients with complex reconstructions and fracture problems. Patients receive treatment at Yale New Haven Hospital—a nationally recognized Level I trauma center. Our Center treats the most complex trauma cases occurring in southern Connecticut, and serves as a tertiary referral center for post-traumatic reconstruction in the southern New England area. Our physicians are experts in fracture care and specialize in treating trauma care patients with spine and hand injuries. An estimated 80,000 children suffer from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in the United States, and the disease is on the rise. We offer comprehensive care to children with IBD—which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis—focusing specifically on young patients and their unique needs. We are dedicated to improving the physical and psychological health—and promoting optimal growth—for all children and adolescents with IBD. We are also proud that our remission rates in patients are higher than the national average. At our weekly clinic at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, patients can meet with IBD specialists, surgeons, nurses, social workers, and nutritionists who are ready to care for them with the most advanced available technology and medication. If surgery is needed, our skilled surgeons use methods, including laparoscopy, that allow for smaller incisions and quicker recovery. Some urologic conditions are present at birth, and others develop over time. Whether for a routine checkup or highly specialized care, our urologists and caregivers provide the most advanced treatment, grounded in research. Our urologists are leaders in the fields of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, as well as men’s health. Our oncology team has made key research breakthroughs in the treatment of metastatic bladder cancer and kidney cancer. In addition, we offer specialized care for kidney disease, incontinence, stone disease, sexual medicine, neurogenic bladder, transgender care, and reconstructive surgery after trauma. In addition to providing treatment at Yale New Haven Hospital, Smilow Cancer Hospital, Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, Greenwich Hospital, and Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, we also have offices located in communities across Connecticut. Above all, at Yale Medicine Urology, we believe in the importance of the patient-doctor relationship. It is the cornerstone of what we do—provide compassionate, quality urologic care to every patient, every day. A multidisciplinary team of urologists, specialty-trained nurses, caregivers, and support staff will take care of patients and their families. The urologist leads the care team, providing a diagnosis and treatment recommendations, as well as performing surgery, if needed, and overseeing the patient’s recovery and postsurgical care. The nurse coordinator is the patient’s advocate and care manager throughout care. Studies show that using nurse coordinators can reduce the length of hospital stays and enhance patient outcomes. Practice nurses provide the day-to-day care during clinical appointments or hospital stays. They administer medications, track vital signs, review general test results, respond to patients’ specific needs, and report to other members of the team. They are available around the clock to answer questions and to help patients through their care. The intake specialist helps to ensure patients are ready in advance of their appointment and have all forms and records completed and sent in advance. We specialize in the care of women throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and their reproductive years. We offer holistic, family-centered, physiologic, and natural approaches to childbirth combined with evidence-based and appropriate medical care. Our mission is to support and empower all women and families to become active participants in decisions about their health, while providing safe, comprehensive care. At Yale, there is a special relationship between obstetricians and midwives. Because of the long history of midwifery in the Yale community, certified nurse-midwifery is embraced and considered an integral part of the care we provide. A certified nurse-midwife is a highly trained practitioner with a master of science degree in nursing, with further training and certification through an accredited nurse-midwifery program. Nurse-midwives specialize in the care of women in a holistic manner and recognize when additional support and consultation are necessary. An obstetrician is a physician who has earned a medical degree followed by a four-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology, focusing on the female reproductive system, including diseases and disorders that may require medical or surgical management. Obstetricians specialize in the management of pregnancy complications, labor, childbirth, and the postpartum period. The nursing staff and providers support individualized care for women based on their unique needs and preferences, supporting natural childbirth with water immersion and aromatherapy, while also providing easy access to modalities such as narcotic and epidural analgesia, as desired.Pediatric Trauma Program
We offer comprehensive, compassionate care for children with traumatic injuries requiring surgery. Our team has ready access to laboratory, radiology, and diagnostic services to help provide the most accurate and immediate care available. Our team of pediatric surgeons and advanced practice nurses (APRNs) works together to address each child’s needs in treating injuries caused by trauma. We collaborate with primary care providers and other pediatric and medical specialists to optimize each child’s health care and provide parents with a comprehensive network for all of their child’s follow-up care, if necessary. We understand that traumatic injury can be frightening for the parents and the child. We want to help everyone feel as comfortable and safe as possible while addressing the child’s immediate medical and surgical needs.
