Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT) is a genetic disorder that causes some blood vessels to develop improperly. Yale radiologists are developing guidelines for the evaluation of blood vessel malformations in the lungs (pulmonary arteriovenous malformations) in children with HHT. This innovative approach will replace CT scans, avoiding the successive and often unnecessary radiation exposure for children who have no symptoms. We are also developing guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of malformed blood vessels in the brain (cerebral arteriovenous malformations), and aim to have these guidelines become part of the standard of care. Our physicians are also examining potential liver transplant guidelines for patients with HHT in heart failure. We are continuously analyzing existing data and conducting evidence-based research to develop new treatment methods that can impact the lives of patients in our care.Skull Base Program
We offer comprehensive, leading-edge surgical care for the removal of both benign and cancerous growths, and abnormalities on the underside of the brain, the skull base, or the top few vertebrae of the spinal column. This type of surgery requires a team of specialists that may include ENT (ear, nose, and throat) surgeons, neurosurgeons, and radiologists.Pituitary Program
The Pituitary Program is a destination center for the clinical management of pituitary, parasellar, and anterior skull base disease delivering state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary care. It is the referral center for the state of Connecticut for treatment of complex pituitary and sellar-parasellar pathology using the expertise of minimally invasive endoscopic skull base surgery jointly performed by neurosurgery and ENT. Patient cases are reviewed by a multidisciplinary pituitary tumor board, with intraoperative hormone monitoring, intraoperative MRI, and whole exome sequencing of tumors for potential genomic-based diagnosis and treatment. The Yale endocrinology team and other supporting subspecialties follow each patient during the hospitalization for uninterrupted endocrine care. We aim to maximize the quality of care and the ultimate outcome of each patient. To ensure the best care possible, we co-manage the pituitary disorder with each patient’s primary care physician, and actively seek second opinions, exploring dynamic testing and pituitary hormone replacement therapy options. Yale New Haven Hospital is a regional center for pituitary surgery, and our physicians have specific expertise in treating a variety of neuroendocrine diseases, including Cushing's disease and adult growth hormone deficiency syndrome. We also evaluate and treat reproductive disorders in collaboration with the sections of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Additionally, we work closely with colleagues in neurosurgery, surgical endocrinology, therapeutic radiology, and other departments to make sure patients benefit from our patient-centered, team-based approach. Combined with first-rate technology at Yale New Haven Hospital, the Yale Cancer Center and the Department of Neurosurgery’s Gamma Knife Center, the Pituitary Program is uniquely positioned to offer every diagnostic and treatment option available, including: Dynamic pituitary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), an enhanced diagnostic imaging technique Inferior petrosal sinus sampling to sample hormones from the veins that drain the pituitary gland 3-D conformal radiotherapy to better target tumors Intensity-modulated radiation therapy, an advanced high-precision technique Transphenoidal surgery performed through the nose and sphenoid sinus Gamma Knife surgery (stereotactic radiosurgery) performed at the Gamma Knife Center, the only dedicated Gamma Knife facility in Connecticut. We provide advanced medical and surgical care for patients with benign and malignant sinus and nasal tumors, as well as disorders of the nose and sinuses, including inhalant allergies, chronic rhinosinusitis, nosebleeds, and nasal obstruction. Our minimally invasive surgical procedures allow our patients to experience shorter recovery times, minimal or no scarring, and less postoperative discomfort.Child Study Center
The Yale Child Study Center is an internationally recognized center of innovation in child and family mental health, dedicated to promoting healthy development and psychological well-being across the lifespan. We care for children and adolescents whose families are concerned about their child’s development and behavior. Common concerns include developmental delays, behaviors or worries that interfere with their child’s life, isolation and fear of school, and defiant and difficult behavior. Our first job is to listen. As we begin to understand the family and child, we will guide our patients through the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment process. We provide office and home-based interventions as well as telehealth services, and we work with as many people involved in your child’s growth as possible, including parents, teachers and pediatricians. Above all, we care about your child’s development and your family’s well-being. We will use every means available—and maybe even invent some new ones—to help the child and their family. We are committed to working with every family to help them understand and address their child’s and family’s needs. Our interdisciplinary teams use up-to-date science to evaluate and then work with the family to develop a comprehensive treatment recommendations. Our treatment may include (one-on-one or group) therapy, family therapy, and parent-centered approaches and collaboration with schools. When appropriate, our providers will discuss the use of medication, providing detailed information so parents can make an informed decision. Many of our patients improve and thrive without medication, and for others it is a valuable part of their treatment. At the Yale Child Study Center, we are pioneering many treatments including approaches that help parents improve disruptive anger and aggression in children with autism and other developmental disorders. We are also developing new ways to help children overcome anxieties that may limit their daily lives, and treatment approaches designed to lessen the impact of an overwhelming event on the child and family. Finally, we work directly with parents around their own concerns about their roles as parents.Internal Medicine
Covering every aspect of health care for adults, Internal Medicine is the largest department in the Yale School of Medicine, and the largest clinical service at Yale New Haven Hospital. We provide comprehensive and specialized services in all areas in a variety of outpatient settings as well as the Veterans Affairs (VA) Connecticut Health Care System campus in West Haven. Our culture of collaboration and research gives patients access to expert opinions from nearly 1,000 doctors, as well as opportunities to get tomorrow’s health care today through more than 100 clinical trials. One of two major pediatric centers in Connecticut, Yale offers an extensive range of services for patients through our 14 specialties. In addition, we have several interdisciplinary centers and programs that involve collaborations with multiple departments throughout Yale Medicine and Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital. Thanks to our reputation for comprehensive pediatric care, we serve as a regional and national center for referral and consultation. The Hematology Program at Smilow Cancer Hospital offers comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of blood cancers: lymphoma, leukemia, and myeloma. While the causes of these cancers remain unknown, great strides in treatment, some of which originated from Yale Cancer Center research, are improving survival rates. The overall aim of treatment is to bring about a complete remission. Treatment approaches for blood cancers may include chemotherapy, radiation oncology, stem cell or marrow transplantation, or immunotherapy. Each patient receives an individual treatment plan, which includes standard care and/or clinical trials, which offer novel treatment options. Yale hematopathologists employ the complete range of diagnostic tools available, including bone marrow examination, bone imaging, M protein analysis, cytogenetics, immunophenotyping, and FISH and PCR analysis, as well as genetic testing and the identification of markers that guide prognosis. Additionally, patients have access to caregivers who help them cope with the physical, emotional, and psychological issues related to these cancers. Advanced practice nurses and social workers assist with education, general information, and practical issues of travel and accommodation assistance. The blood cancers we are fighting: Lymphoma is the most common blood cancer, affecting 81,000 Americans each year. While its rates continue to rise, there have also been rapid advances in treatment, and the current 5-year survival rate for all people diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma is 87%. Leukemia is a malignant cancer of the bone marrow and blood, diagnosed in 60,000 Americans each year. It is the most common cancer in children and teens. The leukemia death rate for children ranging from birth to age 14 in the United States has declined 60% over the past three decades, due to treatment advances. Myeloma is a disease of the plasma cell, and affects approximately 34,000 new patients annually. Overall survival in patients with myeloma has shown improvement in recent years, with treatments recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is a precursor condition that could potentially lead to cancer and should be closely evaluated and monitored. Our myeloma specialists are dedicated to the care of these patients and see them as part of a MGUS Clinic. Stem Cell Transplant The Stem Cell Transplant Program at Smilow Cancer Hospital is a FACT accredited program that was started in 1994 and currently performs around 200 transplants yearly. We perform stem cell and bone marrow transplants for a variety of malignant and benign diseases in both pediatric and adult populations. There are two types of stem cell transplantation that we perform: Autologous transplant: involves using a patient’s own stem cells, whichare collected from their blood and frozen. Our nationally ranked team of caregivers are experts in diagnosing and managing a broad range of acute and chronic kidney diseases, both in the inpatient and outpatient settings. We offer around-the-clock primary care to patients with established renal disease or hypertension, and our physicians are readily available for consultation on newly referred patients. Our services are comprehensive. In some cases, we consult and collaborate with other doctors and work hand-in-hand with referring providers. In other circumstances, we are principal caregivers for our patients. In nearly all instances, our care is multidisciplinary, involving other physicians and specialists, nurse practitioners, physician associates, and skilled nurses. The physicians in our General Internal Medicine section are national leaders in their fields, and provide dedicated, comprehensive patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings at several sites across Connecticut: At Yale Internal Medicine Associates in New Haven, we provide state-of-the-art general medical care for adults. At the New Haven Primary Care Consortium (NHPCC), located at 150 Sargent Drive in New Haven, CT, we provide comprehensive primary care, as well as specialized programs in traveling health, rheumatology, dermatology, podiatry, mental health, and addiction medicine. The Occupational and Environmental Medicine clinic focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases due to chemical, biological, and physical hazards in the workplace and environment. The Primary Care Center located at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven is also a major clinical and teaching site, and provides specialized Women’s Health and stroke care. The Medicine-Pediatric Clinic is located at St. Mary’s Hospital, 133 Scovill Street, in Waterbury. The Yale Addiction Medicine Consult Services provide hospital-based addiction assessment and treatment to patients who are hospitalized at Yale New Haven Hospital.
