The Yale Child Study Center is an internationally recognized center of innovation in child and family mental health, dedicated to promoting healthy development and psychological well-being across the lifespan. We care for children and adolescents whose families are concerned about their child’s development and behavior. Common concerns include developmental delays, behaviors or worries that interfere with their child’s life, isolation and fear of school, and defiant and difficult behavior. Our first job is to listen. As we begin to understand the family and child, we will guide our patients through the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment process. We provide office and home-based interventions as well as telehealth services, and we work with as many people involved in your child’s growth as possible, including parents, teachers and pediatricians. Above all, we care about your child’s development and your family’s well-being. We will use every means available—and maybe even invent some new ones—to help the child and their family. We are committed to working with every family to help them understand and address their child’s and family’s needs. Our interdisciplinary teams use up-to-date science to evaluate and then work with the family to develop a comprehensive treatment recommendations. Our treatment may include (one-on-one or group) therapy, family therapy, and parent-centered approaches and collaboration with schools. When appropriate, our providers will discuss the use of medication, providing detailed information so parents can make an informed decision. Many of our patients improve and thrive without medication, and for others it is a valuable part of their treatment. At the Yale Child Study Center, we are pioneering many treatments including approaches that help parents improve disruptive anger and aggression in children with autism and other developmental disorders. We are also developing new ways to help children overcome anxieties that may limit their daily lives, and treatment approaches designed to lessen the impact of an overwhelming event on the child and family. Finally, we work directly with parents around their own concerns about their roles as parents.

Yale Psychiatry is the largest provider of psychiatric services in Connecticut, and the top National Institutes of Health-supported Department of Psychiatry in the United States. We are dedicated to adding to the body of knowledge in the field, and improving treatments for psychiatric disorders that span all ages. This includes helping people cope with major life events or medical illnesses, behavioral problems associated with personality disorder or addiction, mood and psychotic disorders, and dementia. Yale investigators have pioneered new treatments for nearly every psychiatric disorder. Our research programs have produced breakthroughs in areas as diverse as molecular neuroscience, genetics, translational neuroscience, neuroimaging, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, rehabilitation, health services, forensic psychiatry, epidemiology, and health policy. Today, our clinicians are at the forefront of social, pharmacological, psychological, rehabilitative, and neurostimulation treatments. Through clinical trials, our interventional psychiatry service delivers high-impact treatments, including ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) and ketamine, for patients with treatment-resistant symptoms of depression. Our clinical programs are interwoven with our research efforts. We host programs that specialize in the major mental diseases and substance abuse treatment at three major institutions: Connecticut Mental Health Center, the Veterans Affairs Connecticut Healthcare System, and the Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital. We also provide increased psychiatry support for Smilow Cancer Hospital in areas such as smoking cessation.

At Yale Medicine, our pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine physicians focus on your respiratory health. We have a team of specialists to diagnose, treat, and manage respiratory conditions that affect your lungs and breathing. From asthma to complex lung diseases, our goal is to help you breathe easier. Our doctors are board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, critical care, and sleep medicine. Covering every aspect of health care for adults, Internal Medicine is the largest department in the Yale School of Medicine, and the largest clinical service at Yale New Haven Hospital. We provide comprehensive and specialized services in all areas in a variety of outpatient settings as well as the Veterans Affairs (VA) Connecticut Health Care System campus in West Haven. Physicians may order a pulmonary function test by calling 203-688-4667. Bronchoscopy:Bronchoscopy is the examination of the bronchi (the main airways of the lungs) using a flexible tube (bronchoscope). Bronchoscopy helps to evaluate and diagnose lung problems, assess blockages, obtain samples of tissue and/or fluid, and/or to help remove a foreign body. Bronchoscopies are performed in the pediatric operating room, and in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Our pulmonologists who perform this procedure have extensive experience with flexible bronchoscopy, including its use in newborns. In many cases, flexible bronchoscopy, which can be safely and comfortably performed under conscious sedation, eliminates the need for an exam under general anesthesia.

We specialize in the comprehensive care of traumatically injured patients with life-threatening conditions, critically ill surgical patients, and patients with acute surgical emergencies. They are trained in both traditional open and minimally invasive surgeries, and perform a variety of elective and urgent procedures. Our surgeons also provide vital surgical critical care in support of Yale New Haven Hospital’s Level I adult and pediatric trauma centers. They are committed to research, education for health care providers, as well as injury prevention, state trauma system development, and disaster management. We understand that having a traumatic injury, surgical emergency, or being in a situation requiring critical care can be stressful for patients and their families. Our team members will do their best to help keep everyone as comfortable as possible during care. Our surgeons, nurses, and specialists are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to respond immediately to all major trauma codes, and provide our patients with comprehensive, continuous care and support from admission to discharge. Along with our clinicians, a host of support services, including religious ministries, social workers, and care coordination services are available to help our patients. We focus on: General surgeryfor patients undergoing elective or routine surgery, as well as those with emergency surgical conditions. We evaluate patients prior to surgery in outpatient locations, the emergency department, or the hospital, depending on the urgency of their condition. We always have a senior surgeon available to rapidly attend to critical problems. Trauma carefor all trauma patients admitted to Yale New Haven Hospital, the regional Level 1 trauma center for southern Connecticut and the only trauma center in the state to be verified by the American College of Surgeons for both adult and pediatric patients. Surgical critical careto manage all critically ill surgical patients in the Surgical Intensive Care Units at Yale New Haven Hospital’s York Street and Saint Raphael campuses, and the Intermediate Care Unit at the York Street campus. Our asthma and airway disease experts offer comprehensive, multidisciplinary treatment for a broad spectrum of conditions including: Treatment-resistant asthma Steroid-dependent asthma Steroid-resistant asthma Environmental and occupational asthma Exercise-induced asthma We frequently take care of patients with chronic cough, asthma that is difficult to control, as well as those whose condition is difficult to diagnose and who may be significantly affected by such co-occurring illnesses as gastroesophageal reflux, sinusitis, or vocal-cord dysfunction. We develop individualized care plans for all patients, with the goal of forming a working partnership with the referring primary care provider. Our skilled group includes three pulmonologists, one physician assistant, asthma nurse coordinators, and pulmonary function technicians trained in asthma education. We work closely with our colleagues in allergy and immunology, otolaryngology, gastroenterology and occupational and environmental medicine to coordinate an efficient and comprehensive process of evaluation for patients with complicated asthma. In conjunction with occupational and environmental medicine specialists, we may perform workplace or home environmental evaluations.

More than a century ago, the Winchester Center for Lung Disease was founded with the goal of providing care to patients with tuberculosis, a chronic bacterial infection that usually affects the lungs. Today, we remain firmly committed to that original mission. Located at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven and at 6 Devine Street in North Haven, we are the regional referral center for tuberculosis and nontuberculous mycobacterial diseases. Though the number of active cases of tuberculosis continues to decline in the United States, tuberculosis as a global problem remains an enormous challenge. In an era where disease can easily cross national and geographic boundaries, the need for an active and highly educated tuberculosis service is clear. We treat active cases and identify and evaluate patients with latent tuberculosis infection. We are also actively engaged in outreach based in adult education centers in the New Haven area, screening and caring for high risk people, who often have limited access to health care.

We employ a multidisciplinary approach to care for children’s asthma, which is the most common chronic respiratory illness in children, affecting 5 to 10% of all children in the United States, and accounting for the majority of missed school days. One-third of all emergency department visits are related to asthma, and it is the common reason children are admitted to hospitals.The goals of asthma therapy are to have children lead normal, active lives, and prevent the occurrence of frequent troublesome symptoms or the need for emergency visits and hospitalization. Asthma rates have been on the rise over the past 15 to 20 years. Although asthma cannot be cured, and may be a life-threatening illness, it can be well controlled with proper medication and education. All of our physicians and medical staff who participate in any aspect of children's asthma care work together as a team. This team, the Pediatric Asthma Care Team (PACT), includes pediatricians and pediatric pulmonologists, allergists, emergency department physicians, intensivists, a nurse practitioner, and certified asthma educators.
