The Department of Therapeutic Radiology works closely with the Yale Cancer Center to comprehensively evaluate and treat patients in need of any form of radiation therapy. The Chênevert Family Brain Tumor Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center is an internationally recognized leader in comprehensive and multidisciplinary clinical care, and a hub of excellence for brain tumor research. Our team of specialists is dedicated exclusively to the care of patients with all types of brain tumors, and has extensive experience with: Primary brain tumors, such as glioblastomas, astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas, primary CNS lymphomas, and others Brain metastases and leptomeningeal metastases, which originate from other cancers in the body Other primary tumors, such as meningiomas and schwannomas Rare brain tumors including craniopharyngiomas, medulloblastomas, ependymomas pineal tumors, pituitary tumors, and others All types of neurological complications of cancer and their treatments Our expertise covers all critical components for successful care for patients with brain tumors, from comprehensive diagnostic evaluation and state-of-the-art genomic tumor profiling, to innovative treatment options and cutting-edge clinical trials. We treat all patients, whether they are newly diagnosed or have already received extensive treatment. Our expert physicians are readily available to offer second opinions for patients from all over the country, and rapidly accommodate our patients for prompt evaluation and initiation of care. We also offer an extensive program to improve patients’ quality of life before, during, and after treatment, including psychosocial support, rehabilitation for memory impairment, and other resources. Diagnosis Our experts use state-of-the-art technology to diagnose brain tumors with detailed accuracy. Three Tesla MRIs offer highly sophisticated testing, such as functional MRI, MR spectroscopy, and positron emission tomography (PET). Experienced neuroradiologists read all brain scans and evaluate the images for diagnosis. Importantly, all brain tumors that are biopsied or removed at our program undergo whole exome sequencing, the most advanced technique available for tumor characterization, which can target the vulnerabilities of individual tumors. Medical Oncology Many brain tumors require chemotherapy, targeted therapies, or other medical treatments, often combined with radiation therapy and surgery. Our team of neuro-oncologists have extensive expertise in delivering oncology treatments, with a focus on achieving optimal efficacy and safety. Each patient receives an individualized and coordinated treatment plan, taking into consideration the tumor type, molecular and genomic information on the tumor, and the patient’s own needs and choices. Additionally, our patients have access to cutting-edge Yale clinical trials exploring multiple novel strategies to fight brain cancer. Urologic cancers include prostate, bladder, kidney, urothelial upper tract, testicular, penile, and urethral cancer. The Smilow Cancer Hospital Prostate and Urologic Cancers Program at Yale Medicine is uniquely qualified to treat these cancers. Our program utilizes the most advanced technology and techniques available to diagnose, manage, and treat urologic cancers. We are leaders in the use of MRI/US Fusion prostate biopsy (which blends MRI and ultrasound for increased accuracy), utilizing the ExactVu and Artemis systems across the region. This technology allows us to detect the cancer early and closely monitor it. When surgery is needed, our urologists provide extensive expertise in nerve-sparing laparoscopic and robotic surgery, traditional open surgery, and novel targeted or “focal“ treatments. Our patients also benefit from the expertise of a collaborative approach to cancer care, which personalizes treatment. We engage experts who specialize in medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, pathology, and diagnostic imaging. Patients also have access to caregivers who can help with the physical, emotional, and psychological issues related to these cancers. The extended team includes health educators, social workers, dieticians, and complementary therapists. Our goal is to ensure the highest standard of care to support our patients and their families. Imaging and Interventional Radiology Our radiologists are experts in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and fluoroscopy, and combine their clinical expertise with advances in technology including MR-US fusion for prostate imaging, as well as positron emission tomography (PET) scans and advanced nuclear medicine scans. In addition, Blue Light™ Cystoscopy, an advanced endoscopic technology, is employed to improve bladder cancer detection and reduce risk of cancer recurrence. Surgery Our experienced urologic surgeons are committed to achieving optimal cancer outcomes, emphasizing organ preservation and the safeguarding of sexual and urinary function as much as possible. Through advanced techniques including minimally invasive and robotic surgery, our urologists are able to optimize both cancer care and surgical recovery. Cryoablation (tumor freezing) may be a good option for some patients with prostate or kidney tumors. Focal therapy is also available for appropriate patients with prostate cancer, as it is able to treat the cancer without the use of radiation or surgery, preserving the prostate, as well as urinary and sexual function. Similarly, for some patients with cancers of the ureter or upper urinary tract, a laser can be used to treat the tumor and preserve kidney function. Medical Oncology Chemotherapy is an important component of cancer care for many patients, as it can delay or prevent tumors from recurring when used before surgery. The Head and Neck Cancers Program at Smilow Cancer Hospital provides total care, as well as innovative and organ-sparing treatment options to patients with cancers of the head and neck. Our team sets the tone nationally and internationally for clinical trials and state-of-the-art cancer care. By carefully balancing treatment efficacy with quality-of-life, our collaborative approach to care personalizes treatment for tumors affecting the neck, larynx (voice box), pharynx (throat), oral cavity (mouth), ear, sinuses, tonsils, and salivary glands, as well as cervical (neck) lymph nodes or neck structures. Our multidisciplinary team includes head and neck surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, pathologists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, nutritionists, a smoking cessation specialist, dentists, a physical/lymphedema therapist, advanced practice nurses, and social workers. Functional outcome is an important element in deciding which treatment approach is recommended. Our program offers a promising new surgical technique, transoral robotic surgery (TORS), that can be used to remove certain throat cancers while avoiding skin and bone incisions. This approach speeds healing and shortens a patient’s hospital stay. Likewise, patients with certain laryngeal cancers, who a few years ago would have lost their vocal cords and their voices, can often be treated with less invasive surgeries. Patients who undergo these treatments maintain their ability to speak, although they may need to alter their diet or learn new swallowing techniques. At Yale, rehabilitative specialists work with patients to help them adjust to and overcome some of these swallowing impairments. In many cases, radical neck dissections have been replaced by less radical surgeries that preserve the nerves, arteries, and muscles in the neck. Patients continue to move, speak, breathe, and eat normally after less radical surgeries, without sacrificing cure rates. Additionally, in recent years, the field of reconstructive surgery has achieved many breakthroughs, yielding previously unattainable cosmetic and functional outcomes. Medical Oncology Our medical oncologists have unique expertise in head and neck cancers and dedicate their practice entirely to cancers of the head and neck. The integration of chemotherapy with radiation has become very important for patients with head and neck cancers that involve the lymph nodes or is locally extensive, and this approach can lead to organ preservation and increase the chance of cure for many patients. Breakthroughs in targeted therapy and biomarkers allow a personalized approach that can avoid the toxicities of conventional chemotherapy in some cases, and new treatments to prevent recurrence in high-risk situations are also being studied. For patients with recurrent disease, new anti-cancer drugs and immunotherapies are also available. Our experienced team of physicians is always at work developing new guidelines and insights in the use of radiation for prostate cancer, leading to better outcomes for our patients. The past decade has brought about major changes in the way radiotherapy is delivered for prostate cancer. The most significant change is the development of Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), allowing a targeted, precise radiation dose around the prostate, while minimizing radiation exposure of the surrounding areas, such as the rectum and bladder. Radiation is a critical part of treatment for almost all advanced head and neck cancers, and can be delivered alone or combined with chemotherapy before or after surgery. Precise radiation techniques are vital for patients with head and neck tumors, since crucial structures that are often very close to tumors must be avoided.Intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) accurately targets tumors while minimizing damage to normal surrounding tissue.Breast Cancer Radiotherapy
Unlike a mastectomy, which removes the entire breast, breast-conserving surgery removes only the affected breast tissue, allowing patients to continue to radiation therapy on an intact breast. Yale was one of the first facilities in the country to offer this effective combination of treatments. Our physicians also perform radiation following mastectomy, and radiation for treatment of metastasis, or for cancer that has spread. To deliver radiation for breast cancer , we use a variety of novel treatments, including conventional external beam radiation, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH), and partial breast irradiation. We also offer hypo-fractionated breast radiation, a new treatment that reduces the duration of rational therapy, with fewer side effects.Yale Cancer Center

Spine radiosurgery is a noninvasive, painless technique that precisely targets high doses of radiation at tumors within or near the spine.Our goal is to provide long-lasting control of pain and local disease for patients with spinal metastases. Our team consists of radiation oncologists, neurosurgeons, and neuroradiologists who work together to determine and deliver the optimal treatment plan for each patient.Pediatric Hematology & Oncology Program
The dedicated pediatric hematologists and oncologists of the Yale Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Program provide comprehensive and compassionate care for children with all forms of cancer and blood diseases, including leukemia, malignant tumors and lymphomas, as well as sickle cell disease, hemophilia, coagulation abnormalities, and platelet disorders. Our program utilizes a team approach to care, and is active in research that seeks to advance the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric cancer and blood diseases. Cure rates continue to rise for children with cancer. At Yale, we are determined that more and more children will survive, and that they will thrive. We work to design treatments that cause less discomfort to patients in the short term and fewer serious complications in the long term. Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital’s care team works with patients and their families to design individual treatment plans. In addition to an oncologist, our multidisciplinary team includes advanced practice providers, registered nurses, social workers, a psychologist, psychiatrist, neuropsychologist, nutritionist, and child life specialists, all who have expertise in the medical, social, emotional and educational needs of children and teens. Understanding that children with cancer and blood disorders need more than medical care, we work with patients and their families to help them meet their social, emotional, educational, and behavioral needs. Our support services include: Routine psychosocial evaluations for newly diagnosed patients and their families. Home visits for the most gravely ill or psychiatrically symptomatic children and their families. A school integration program that includes counseling for families and children about their rights to have special services. We work with school districts to make appropriate accommodations for students returning to school, including providing special education services, if necessary. Psychoeducation and neuropsychological testing for patients at risk for neurocognitive problems. Support groups for siblings and parents. End-of-life support team for children and families. HEROS Survivorship Program The HEROS (Health, Education, Research & Outcomes for Survivors of Childhood Cancer) Survivorship Program at Smilow promotes the lifelong health of pediatric cancer patients after their cancer treatment has ended.It was the first childhood cancer survivorship program in Connecticut to offer comprehensive care for adults and children who had survived pediatric cancer. In our specialty clinic, patients receive detailed cancer treatment summaries and an individualized schedule for future screening for chronic conditions related to their original cancer treatment.
