Covering every aspect of health care for adults, Internal Medicine is the largest department in the Yale School of Medicine, and the largest clinical service at Yale New Haven Hospital. We provide comprehensive and specialized services in all areas in a variety of outpatient settings as well as the Veterans Affairs (VA) Connecticut Health Care System campus in West Haven. The largest center for specialty dermatology in Connecticut, Yale’s Department of Dermatology is among the oldest in the United States. Our doctors and nurses provide safe, compassionate, and innovative care to all members of our community. We offer treatment for skin conditions, all of which can interfere with quality of life. Cutting-edge therapies are often the only hope for patients with resistant dermatologic illness, which affects the whole skin surface. Our physicians are deeply rooted in research, including the exploration of new technologies such as photopheresis for cutaneous T-cell lymphoma and graft-versus-host disease. When a health crisis can’t wait, our expert emergency care team is ready to respond 24/7, 365 days a year, at three locations across the greater New Haven area: our main campus at York Street, the Saint Raphael campus, and the Shoreline Medical Center in Guilford. Our board-certified emergency physicians, surgeons, and specialists, as well as emergency-trained nurses and support staff, are ready at any time to provide immediate care for any urgent illness and injury. People of all ages can receive care at any of our emergency departments. At York Street, children can be seen at a separate pediatric emergency department. Yale Infectious Diseases cares for ambulatory and hospitalized patients with every variety of infectious disease. Specialized services are offered in such areas as traveler’s health, tick-borne diseases, HIV, and related disorders. Research explores such areas as Lyme disease, West Nile and Zika virus, microbial pathogenesis, pneumonia and UTI in older adults, HIV, meningitis, malaria and international health, and nosocomial infections. We are both consultants, working hand-in-hand with referring physicians or groups, and principal caregivers for our patients. Our care is multidisciplinary, involving skilled nurses, dietitians, social workers, and other physicians to deliver the best care possible. Our dermatologists are here to help improve the health and appearance of patients’ skin, and to diagnose and treat both benign and malignant skin conditions. We provide specialized care for the full spectrum of skin disorders, including acne, alopecia areata, psoriasis, inherited skin disease, and skin issues arising after organ transplant and during cancer treatment. We are one of two centers in the state with a pigmented lesion clinic, phototherapy center, and cutaneous lymphoma clinic. The clinical research efforts of our dermatologists have contributed significantly to the treatment of skin tumors such as melanomas and cutaneous T-cell lymphomas. We are actively exploring the uses of advanced technologies such as photopheresis, a therapy for life-threatening and debilitating diseases like cutaneous T-cell lymphoma and graft-versus-host disease. A large portion of the department's research is performed through two separate research entities—the Yale SPORE in Skin Cancer Center and the Spitzoid Neoplasm Repository.

Yale Cancer Center is Connecticut's only cancer center designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute—and one of only 57 in the nation. The significance of this designation has profound implications for those who choose Smilow Cancer Hospital as the place where they will be cared for and receive treatment for their cancer. National Cancer Institute cancer centers are national leaders in cancer research, prevention, detection, and treatment. This provides patients at Smilow Cancer Hospital with novel treatment options and expert care.

At any time and every day of the year, our highly trained specialists are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent, diagnose, and manage a vast array of acute illness and injuries among infants, children, and adolescents. We collaborate with pediatric medical and surgical specialists to bring the best emergency care to infants and children. Each year, the Pediatric Emergency Department at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, a Level I trauma center, treats more than 40,000 children from infancy to age 20. The state-of-the-art, dedicated children’s department features 16 rooms and two major treatment/trauma rooms. It is in close proximity to but distinctly separate from the adult emergency department, and is staffed by physicians and nurses skilled in caring for children. Full-time pediatricians, each of whom has completed additional training in pediatric emergency medicine, oversee patient care. Our staff is ready for any medical emergency, but common conditions we treat include: Respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses Poisoning, including environmental toxins Major and minor trauma, including head injury Suspected child abuse and neglect Abdominal emergencies Behavioral and psychiatric emergencies In addition to our attending emergency medicine physicians, our team includes fellows, physician assistants, pediatric residents, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, sexual assault nurse examiners, and forensic experts. Our patients have 24-hour access to experts from all pediatric specialties, including toxicology and critical care. Child life specialists and pediatric social workers are also ready to ease the emergency room experience for children and families. Our team is expert in the fields of bedside ultrasound, injury prevention, and disaster preparedness.

One of two major pediatric centers in Connecticut, Yale offers an extensive range of services for patients through our 14 specialties. In addition, we have several interdisciplinary centers and programs that involve collaborations with multiple departments throughout Yale Medicine and Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital. Thanks to our reputation for comprehensive pediatric care, we serve as a regional and national center for referral and consultation. We specialize in the comprehensive care of traumatically injured patients with life-threatening conditions, critically ill surgical patients, and patients with acute surgical emergencies. They are trained in both traditional open and minimally invasive surgeries, and perform a variety of elective and urgent procedures. Our surgeons also provide vital surgical critical care in support of Yale New Haven Hospital’s Level I adult and pediatric trauma centers. They are committed to research, education for health care providers, as well as injury prevention, state trauma system development, and disaster management. We understand that having a traumatic injury, surgical emergency, or being in a situation requiring critical care can be stressful for patients and their families. Our team members will do their best to help keep everyone as comfortable as possible during care. Our surgeons, nurses, and specialists are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to respond immediately to all major trauma codes, and provide our patients with comprehensive, continuous care and support from admission to discharge. Along with our clinicians, a host of support services, including religious ministries, social workers, and care coordination services are available to help our patients. We focus on: General surgeryfor patients undergoing elective or routine surgery, as well as those with emergency surgical conditions. We evaluate patients prior to surgery in outpatient locations, the emergency department, or the hospital, depending on the urgency of their condition. We always have a senior surgeon available to rapidly attend to critical problems. Trauma carefor all trauma patients admitted to Yale New Haven Hospital, the regional Level 1 trauma center for southern Connecticut and the only trauma center in the state to be verified by the American College of Surgeons for both adult and pediatric patients. Surgical critical careto manage all critically ill surgical patients in the Surgical Intensive Care Units at Yale New Haven Hospital’s York Street and Saint Raphael campuses, and the Intermediate Care Unit at the York Street campus. Patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis often require a host of medications to manage their disease. One type in particular—biologics—are highly effective, but they can be complicated to administer. They are also expensive, which means navigating insurance coverage can be difficult and result in treatment delays. The Psoriasis Treatment Program brings together a board-certified medical dermatologist who specializes in psoriasis and a pharmacist from Yale New Haven Hospital Ambulatory Clinical Pharmacy Services who is an expert in psoriasis medication management and coordinating insurance coverage. Together, this dedicated team can manage patients’ care in a seamless fashion, which ensures prompt care. One medical professional focuses on the disease process and treatment selection; the other medication management. In this collaborative model, patients meet with their physician first to discuss a treatment plan and talk separately with the pharmacist. The pharmacist talks in depth with the patient, obtaining a complete medical history and answering all questions related to potential laboratory tests and prescribed medications, which can include injections they self-administer at home, as well as oral and topical treatments. The two points of access mean that patients aren’t condensing all of their questions about their treatment plan into one appointment, and the two medical professionals communicate closely about their psoriasis patients. If one is not available to help, the other can. Patients can work directly with their pharmacist on all issues related to medications, side effects, and insurance coverage in between follow-up appointments with their physician. Having two points of contact allows patients timely access to their medical team as well as their prescribed medications. The program brings together a physician who has expertise in treating psoriasis and a pharmacist with additional training in outpatient care and in dermatologic medications, including those for psoriasis. Managing medications for dermatologic patients is the pharmacist’s full-time job. The pharmacist educates patients about the medications and can obtain insurance coverage and set up home delivery of the medications, taking many hassles and obstacles out of the patient’s hands.
