Surgical Oncology

A cancer diagnosis can have a profound impact on your patient’s life. Understandably, most patients have many questions about the road ahead. Our surgical oncology team will provide your patient with compassionate care and lend support as they navigate decisions related to their specific condition.

We work in collaboration with medical and radiation oncologists at Yale Cancer Center. Our world-renowned oncology surgeons treat benign and malignant conditions affecting the breast and gastrointestinal tract, including surgical interventions for patients with melanoma and sarcoma.

Our goal is for your patient to begin treatment as soon as possible. During the first visit, your patient will meet with a surgical oncologist, medical oncologist, and a radiation oncologist who will create a personalized treatment plan for their condition.

Distinguishing Factors

  • Multidisciplinary approach to care: Our surgeons collaborate with other internationally recognized cancer care specialists at the Smilow Cancer Hospital, including diagnostic and interventional radiologists, gastroenterologists, hepatologists, imaging specialists, and pathologists.
  • Personalized treatment plan: Whether patients are newly diagnosed with cancer or their cancer has not responded to traditional treatment therapies, our team of surgeons and specialists will create a personalized plan based on the latest research, technologies, evidence-based medicine, and the possibility of clinical trials.
  • Minimally invasive surgery: We focus on achieving the most successful surgery with the least pain, scarring, and recovery time. Our expert surgeons are leaders in minimally invasive procedures, even for many complex cases that would otherwise require traditional open surgery.
  • Whipple procedure: An innovative approach that allows surgeons to remove the affected part of the pancreas, small intestine, gallbladder, and bile ducts along with surrounding lymph nodes so that many patients with pancreatic cancer can be treated successfully with surgery.
  • Access to medical and support services: Because our surgeons treat patients at the Smilow Cancer Hospital, patients will have access to a multitude of medical and support services to help improve their quality of life while living with cancer—and after cancer.
