Biography

Thomas Fernandez, MD, is a child psychiatrist who specializes in diagnosing and treating Tourette syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and anxiety disorders. He works closely with children, adolescents, and their families to help manage symptoms through medical and behavioral approaches.

As an associate professor in the Child Study Center and in psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Fernandez researches the role of genetic changes in these conditions. “My research program aims to identify the most relevant targets for new treatments and speed their translation into the clinic,” he says. “As a practicing child psychiatrist, this translational potential is the most important motivation for my work.”

Dr. Fernandez received his medical training from Yale School of Medicine, where he also completed residency and fellowship training in psychiatry and childhood neuropsychiatric disorders. He has been recognized internationally, including as a finalist for the Ziskind-Somerfeld Research Award by the Society of Biological Psychiatry.
