Kamal Addagatla, MD
Biography
Kamal Addagatla, MD, MS, is a double board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon whose practice focuses on breast cancer reconstruction.
Dr. Addagatla provide all options of breast reconstruction including implant-based, autologous, oncoplastic, and revisionary surgeries. Being fellowship-trained in microsurgery, he specializes in autologous (free flap) breast reconstruction, which involves strategically utilizing distant tissue to perform breast reconstruction using one’s own tissue.
“We typically use tissue from the abdomen to reconstruct the void left after a mastectomy,” Dr. Addagatla explains. “Microsurgery is surgery at a microscopic level. We are wearing magnifying glasses to dissect very small vessels two or three millimeters in size to find the blood vessels that feed the tissue we use to reconstruct. I tell patients that this is essentially a transplant, but within your own body, so your body doesn't reject it.”
The best part of his job, Dr. Addagatla says, is forming a trusting relationship with his patients. “Even though they have just received disheartening news, I try to create a comfortable atmosphere and focus on their goals, what concerns them, and how we can achieve the best possible outcome for them,” he says. “I always try to think of ways I can provide some relief and some happiness and a positive outlook to my patients.”
One of the first things Dr. Addagatla tells his patients when he meets them is that their safety is his top priority. “Aesthetics and reconstructive efforts all come next,” he says. “I think that helps put them at ease to understand and build on that groundwork to talk about what options we can offer them.”
In addition to breast cancer reconstruction, Dr. Addagatla provides a wide range of general plastic surgery services including but not limited to aesthetic breast and body contouring. He is an assistant professor of surgery (plastic) at Yale School of Medicine and enjoys teaching medical students, residents, and fellows. His practice incorporates his experiences from both academic and private practice.
