Anika K. Anam, MD
Biography
Anika Anam, MD, is an endocrinologist who cares for patients with osteoporosis, metabolic bone disease, and type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Dr. Anam has had a long-standing interest in endocrinology which was sparked by experiences caring for patients with diverse endocrine issues during medical school and her internal medicine residency.
“Endocrinology is fascinating because there is a wide range of complex pathophysiology and the opportunity to cultivate long-term relationships with patients while we work together to understand their condition,” Dr. Anam says. “There are several endocrine glands that communicate using hormones, and when these glands do not produce the proper amount of hormones, diseases can develop. My role is to diagnose and treat these conditions while considering the whole patient.”
She reassures patients that there are strategies for treating challenging diseases. For example, for patients with osteoporosis, “I let them know that a multipronged approach including lifestyle modifications, physical therapy, and pharmacotherapy can be successful. I help patients understand the various treatment options so that they can make choices that fit with their priorities and goals,” she says.
Dr. Anam also has clinical interests in obesity, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and transgender care. After completing her clinical endocrinology fellowship at Yale, she also completed a research fellowship at Yale during which she worked on research studies spanning metabolism and reproductive tract pathophysiology. An assistant professor at Yale School of Medicine, she is interested in medical education and clinical research studies in bone health.
