Preventing Obesity in Preterm Infants

  • Study IRB#:2000031084
  • Last Updated:07/03/2026

The goal of this study is to understand how metabolic health in pregnancy, such as obesity or diabetes, influence infant growth and metabolism in the newborn period and during infancy. This study will follow a cohort of infants from birth through age 2-years to understand how growth, metabolism, and fat development after birth relate to growth in early childhood. We know that metabolic health during pregnancy, such as glucose levels or the amount of weight gained in pregnancy, can increase the risk of later metabolic health in children long-term. By studying changes in growth and metabolism in these infants in the time after birth and during early infancy, we hope to determine how we can decrease the risk of these later health conditions.

    Eligibility Criteria

We are recruiting infants born to English and Spanish-speaking mothers >18 years of age at Yale New Haven Hospital. We are enrolling both preterm infants born 32- to 36- weeks gestational age and those born at term.

Since this study will examine the influence of diabetes and obesity during pregnancy on infant growth and metabolism, we are specifically enrolling infants born to women with diabetes and/or obesity during pregnancy. We are also enrolling women who have taken a GLP-1 medication for weight loss or glucose control prior to pregnancy or early in pregnancy, to understand how use of these medication prior to pregnancy or in early pregnancy may influence infant growth.
