Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome

Definition

Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by a compromised immune system, low platelet count, and an increased risk of infections, autoimmune diseases, and certain types of cancer. It primarily affects males and is caused by mutations in the WAS gene, which is responsible for producing the Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (WASp) that plays a crucial role in immune cell function.
