Whipple disease is a rare bacterial infection that primarily affects the small intestine, leading to malabsorption of nutrients. It is caused by the bacterium Tropheryma whipplei and can also involve other organs such as the heart, lungs, brain, and joints. If left untreated, Whipple disease can be fatal.
