Tay-Sachs disease is a rare, inherited neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the progressive deterioration of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It is caused by deficiency of the enzyme hexosaminidase A, which leads to the accumulation of a fatty substance called GM2 ganglioside, resulting in nerve cell damage.
