Pulmonary Interstitial Emphysema
Definition
Pulmonary interstitial emphysema (PIE) is a rare lung condition characterized by the presence of air in the interstitial tissues of the lungs, often occurring in premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome or in adults with severe lung injury. This trapped air can cause pressure on the surrounding lung tissue, leading to complications such as lung collapse, pneumothorax, or respiratory failure.
