Physiatry, also known as physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R), is a branch of medicine that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and nonsurgical treatment of disabilities and conditions that occur due to a disorder, disease, or injury typically of a musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, neuromuscular, or neurological nature. Physicians who specialize in this branch of medicine, known as physiatrists, help people restore function and improve patients' quality of life. Physiatrists focus not just on one part of the body, but instead on the development of a comprehensive program for putting the pieces of a person's life back together—medically, socially, emotionally, and vocationally—after injury or disease.
