Pericardial Effusion and Cardiac Tamponade

Definition

Pericardial effusion is a condition where excess fluid accumulates in the pericardial sac, the double-layered membrane surrounding the heart. Cardiac tamponade is a life-threatening complication of pericardial effusion, in which the accumulated fluid puts pressure on the heart, impairing its ability to pump blood effectively.
