Peptic Ulcer
Definition
Peptic ulcer is a condition characterized by the formation of open sores or ulcers in the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine (duodenum) due to the breakdown of the protective mucosal layer. It can result from various causes, including infection with Helicobacter pylori bacteria, long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and excessive production of stomach acid.
