Myxedema is a severe form of hypothyroidism characterized by the accumulation of mucopolysaccharides in the skin and other tissues, leading to symptoms such as swelling, dry and thickened skin, and slowed mental function. It can be caused by insufficient thyroid hormone production or inadequate response to thyroid hormones in the body.
