Low Anterior Resection

Definition

Low anterior resection (LAR) is a surgical procedure performed to remove a portion of the rectum affected by cancer or other diseases. The remaining healthy part of the rectum is then reconnected to the colon, allowing for normal bowel function. This procedure is commonly used in the treatment of rectal cancer and aims to preserve the anal sphincter muscles, avoiding the need for a permanent colostomy.
