Locked-In Syndrome

Definition

Locked-in syndrome is a rare neurological condition characterized by complete paralysis of voluntary muscles in the body, except for those controlling eye movement. It is typically caused by damage to the brainstem, which can result from a stroke, traumatic brain injury, or other medical conditions. Individuals with locked-in syndrome are conscious and aware but unable to move or communicate verbally due to the paralysis.
