Definition
Listeriosis is a bacterial infection caused by the Listeria monocytogenes bacterium. It primarily affects pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Ingestion of contaminated food is the most common route of transmission. Listeriosis can lead to severe complications such as meningitis, septicemia, and miscarriage or stillbirth in pregnant women.
