Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE)

Definition

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the esophagus, characterized by the presence of an elevated number of eosinophils (a type of white blood cell) in the esophageal tissue. This inflammation can lead to difficulty swallowing, food impaction, and esophageal damage. The exact cause of EoE is unknown, but it is thought to be related to allergies, immune system dysfunction, or genetic factors.
