Cutaneous Larva Migrans

Definition

Cutaneous larva migrans is a parasitic infection caused by hookworm larvae. It is contracted when a person walks barefoot in soft soil or sand that is contaminated with animal feces. It commonly affects the feet, the space between toes, hands, knees, and buttocks. The larvae penetrate the skin and migrate through the epidermis, causing intense itching, red line (serpiginous) tracks, and inflammation.
