Barrett's esophagus is a condition in which the normal squamous cells lining the lower part of the esophagus are replaced by columnar cells, typically due to chronic exposure to stomach acid from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This change in cell type increases the risk of developing esophageal adenocarcinoma, a type of esophageal cancer.
