Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder

Definition

Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a psychological condition characterized by a persistent avoidance or restriction of food intake, leading to significant nutritional deficiencies, weight loss, or interference with normal growth and development. It is not driven by concerns about body weight or shape. It may be related to an extreme sensitivity to taste or texture and fear of chocking or vomiting. It is distinct from other eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa.
