Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM)

Definition

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a rare inflammatory condition that affects the brain and spinal cord. It is characterized by a brief but widespread attack on the central nervous system's myelin, the protective covering of nerve fibers. ADEM is often triggered by a viral or bacterial infection and can result in neurological symptoms such as weakness, loss of coordination, and slurred speech.
